Following a fire on Holi, burned bundles of cash were discovered in an outhouse on the grounds of Justice Yashwant Varma’s bungalow.
New Delhi: On Thursday, six high court bar groups presented a list of four demands, including the opening of a criminal probe against the judge, to the Supreme Court Collegium in protest of Justice Yashwant Varma’s transfer from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court.
The Allahabad Association’s president, Vishal stated that the Collegium, presided over by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, listened to their concerns patiently and promised to take them into consideration.
However, he made no mention of whether the association, which had previously rejected the relocation and said their court was not a “trash bin,” would end the nationwide strike that they had started on Tuesday morning.
“We demanded four things. The transfer ought to be canceled first. Second and third, Justice Varma shouldn’t be assigned any judicial or administrative duties until a thorough investigation is finished. Fourth, a criminal probe had to start right now, Mr. Tiwari stated.
“… if I were not satisfied, I would have made such a statement before the media,” the senior lawyer said, downplaying any indication that he was unhappy with the Collegium’s reaction. However, I’m content. I have conveyed to the Chief Justice anything I wished to say.”
“After listening intently, the Collegium declared, ‘Don’t worry at all. Every concern mentioned will be taken into consideration. Additionally, he told reporters following the meeting, “This is a big statement by five senior judges.”
When the strike was called off, however, he only stated, “A strike is not the decision of one person.”
“The 35,000 lawyers who make up the Association’s General Assembly decide to go on strike. It was them who made this choice. It is my responsibility as President to inform them of this most recent event. After that, they will make a choice,”.
He asserted that the Association is aware of its obligations to the public and the judiciary.
“I am a positive man. My feeling is that since the Chief Justice has said he will take a decision, I say we should wait for that decision,”
Justice Yashwant Varma is the judge at whose home burnt bundles of cash were found – in an outhouse on the grounds of his bungalow – after a fire was put out on Holi.

According to reports, four or five bundles of burning currency were found.
He has spoken of a “conspiracy” against him and distanced himself and his family from the money.
